The dog-friendly promise
Enclosed gardens after long beach walks
Cliff paths and field tracks
Walks from the door, and the beach the dog can use
The village cottages at Scalby, Suffield, Irton Moor and Seamer sit among farmland, with field paths and farm tracks straight from the door. Some are working farms, so the dog goes on the lead past the sheep. From a few you can pick up the Cinder Track, the old Scarborough to Whitby railway line, without the car.
Scarborough's North Bay and South Bay ban dogs from 1 May to 30 September, so the town sands are off limits in summer. Cayton Bay, a few miles south, takes dogs all year, as do Runswick Bay and Robin Hood's Bay up the coast. Out of season, the town beaches open back up.
The Cleveland Way follows the cliffs straight through, so you can walk the coast either way with the sea beside you. For a bigger day inland, Dalby Forest and the North York Moors give woodland and open moor, with Filey and Flamborough Head down the coast.
Where to set up
In town for the beach, or a village for the quiet
The 18 cottages split between Scarborough itself and a ring of coast and farmland villages. In town you get beach mornings; out in the villages, field walks and quiet.
In Scarborough
The biggest houses are in town, within walking distance of the beach and the sea front. Coronation House, Royal Victoria House, North Beach Lodge and Seacrest Lodge take big groups, with the beach, harbour and shops close by.
North up the coast
North toward Whitby the coast quietens. Wagtail Nest at Scalby, Castle View at Burniston and Rosefinch Cabin at Staintondale sit near the Cleveland Way and the Cinder Track, with enclosed gardens and field walks from the door.
The inland villages
A few miles inland, Suffield, Irton Moor, Seamer and Brompton-by-Sawdon hold the quiet couples' cottages, like The Old Workshop, Tawny Cottage and The Old Chapel. Farmland walks from the door, and a short drive back to the coast or out to the moors.
South to Cayton and Filey
South of town, Owl View at Lebberston is closest to Cayton Bay, the beach that takes dogs all year, and Rutland Grange sits down at Filey. Best if you want the year-round dog sands within easy reach.
