Isle of Wight dog-friendly hot tub cottages

Five cottages dotted around the Island, from Totland Bay in the west to Bembridge and Sandown in the east, four with fully enclosed gardens and all with a private hot tub. Plenty of Island beaches stay open to dogs all year too, when the busy resort sands shut to them each summer.

Beaches and coast paths

From the year-round sands to the chalk downs

The summer beach rule

From 1 May to 30 September, dogs are banned from the main resort beaches, Sandown, Shanklin, Ryde and Ventnor among them. Plenty stay open all year: Totland Bay and Compton Bay in the west, and Seagrove Bay, Priory Bay and St Helens Duver over in the east. Out of season the resort sands reopen to dogs.

Tennyson Down and the Needles

Above Totland and Freshwater, the coast path climbs Tennyson Down and the heather of Headon Warren out to the Needles, with sea on both sides. Keep the dog on the lead near the cliff edges and the grazing, and from March to July where signs mark ground-nesting birds.

Inland at Newport, and the Wootton creek

Newport sits at the centre of the Island, so The Coach House has field paths from the door and a short drive to either coast. Over at Wootton, Byewater looks onto a tidal creek, with flatter shoreline and woodland walking close by.

Which corner to pick

West for the big walks, east for the quiet sands

The Island is small enough to cross in under an hour, so where you base yourself is really about which coast and which walks you want on the doorstep.

West Wight: Totland and Freshwater

Topsails sits in Totland Bay, one of the beaches dogs can use all year, with Tennyson Down and the Needles a short walk up the coast. It sleeps eight and takes up to three dogs, the most on the page, so it suits a big group that wants long coast walks and a year-round beach close by.

The centre: Newport

The Coach House sits inland near Newport, in the middle of the Island, with field paths from the door and quick reach to either coast. An enclosed garden and two dogs welcome make it the easy pick for a couple or small family who want walks first and a beach when they fancy it.

By the water: Wootton

Byewater is a four-bedroom lodge on a tidal creek near Wootton, sleeping eight with a log fire and room for kayaks and paddleboards. Two dogs are welcome and the garden is enclosed, though the creek edge means keeping an eye on the dog near the water.

The east coast: Bembridge and Sandown

The Island's year-round dog beaches, Seagrove Bay, Priory Bay and St Helens Duver, are on this side near Bembridge. Crosswinds 67 is a holiday-park lodge here with a pool and hot tub, taking one dog on gated decking. Station Avenue is a big family house a little south at Sandown, the lowest price on the page, though Sandown's own beach shuts to dogs in summer.

Dog & hot tub questions

Can I take my dog on the ferry?

Yes, and it costs nothing extra. Both Wightlink and Red Funnel carry dogs free on every crossing. On the car ferries you can sit with the dog in a pet lounge or leave it in your car, and on foot you keep it on the lead. Red Funnel needs no booking for the dog; Wightlink just asks that you note the pet when you book online.

Is the hot tub included, or an extra?

Every hot tub here is private to your cottage. At some, such as The Coach House and Crosswinds 67, use is included. At others it runs for an extra charge or a seasonal supplement, which you will see on the booking page before you pay.
