Taking the dog out

Seasonal beach access, lead rules and Bacton Wood

Winterton Dunes and the seals

Keep dogs on leads throughout Winterton Dunes nature reserve. During the November-to-January seal breeding season, wardens ask visitors to stay off Horsey beach and use marked viewing routes. Follow the signs as routes change; a winter seal visit is a lead walk, not a beach run.

Bacton, Walcott and Mundesley

From 1 May to 30 September, dogs are banned from some marked sections of these beaches and promenades and must be on leads in others. These restrictions cover mapped sections, so check the council maps and signs before choosing where to enter the sand.

Bacton Wood

For a change from the sand, Bacton Wood east of North Walsham welcomes dogs on its woodland paths. Keep them close and in sight, using a lead if recall is unreliable. There are no toilets or bins, so take bags and carry waste home.

Match the setting to the stay

Beach approaches and garden space, area by area

Heacham faces the Wash; the other coastal stays are around Bacton, Cart Gap, Winterton and Gorleston. Inland choices range from the small patio at Knapton to a working farm at Beeston.

Winterton-on-Sea

Fallowfield and Drifters both sleep eight and have enclosed gardens. Fallowfield has a lawn and a short walk to the dune footpath, which involves steps. Its listing states a seven-night minimum and no Sunday check-in; confirm your dates before booking. At Drifters, a gate leads from the garden down about thirty steep steps to the dunes. Its conservatory looks towards the sea.

Bacton's park lodges

Life's a Beach and Sandy Snug each sleep four on Sandy Beach Holiday Park. Life's a Beach has an enclosed lawn and Friday or Monday changeovers. After a same-day changeover, its hot tub can take up to 24 hours to reheat. Sandy Snug has raised decking, a roof terrace and entrance steps; its listing requires Friday arrivals and at least seven nights. Confirm dates before booking. Neighbouring lodges are close.

Knapton for two

Spinney's Den takes two adults and one dog, with a small hot-tub patio and balcony. The living space is upstairs, and children are not accommodated. Expect some noise from the nearby main road; the hot tub is for your use but may be overlooked. The minimum stay is two nights.

Southrepps for a larger group

High House sleeps sixteen with an enclosed garden and a games room. You can bring two dogs, but they must stay downstairs. The shared driveway has CCTV. School summer holidays require Saturday-to-Saturday weeks.

Cart Gap, near Happisburgh

Beach Haven has a wraparound lawn and sea views for a group of eight. Supervise dogs at the low garden boundary. The garden route to the beach involves steps and the sea wall; check current access and tide conditions before relying on it. Stays need a week during listed peak holidays; check seasonal dates before booking.

Gorleston-on-Sea

Lighthouse View is a three-storey house for eleven near the beach, with a rear lawn and covered seating. Confirm the garden boundaries if your dog needs enclosed space. Parking is tight for larger cars. Gorleston's north beach has summer dog restrictions. July and August stays must be a week or more.

Heacham on the west coast

Malthouse Farm sleeps nine, including infants, with a lawn and patio. Its sitting area is described as non-enclosed, so check the boundary arrangements for your dogs. Heacham Beach accepts dogs; nearby Hunstanton's marked beach section excludes them from 1 April to 31 October. The minimum stay is three nights.

Inland at Old Buckenham or Beeston

Whitehands Farm Barn near Old Buckenham has an enclosed garden and an outside tap for washing down, with two internal steps to two bedrooms. Keepers Cottage at Beeston near Dereham is on a working farm, reached along an uneven track. Its warm outside tap helps after muddy walks. Both sleep six.
