Forest walks by water
The 5.8km Loch Morlich circuit follows gravel paths. Much is wide and fairly flat, but muddy sections, a steep ramp and two road crossings need attention. Keep your dog close around wildlife and other walkers, and check Forestry and Land Scotland's alerts before setting out.
Take the woodland paths beside the River Braan for a shorter outing beneath the trees. Uneven rock, slopes and steps mean this is not a smooth pavement walk. Keep dogs under control and on a lead near fast water and slippery rocks; dogs cannot go inside Ossian's Hall.
Little Bruntis Trail is a 4km woodland walk on firm gravel, with fairly steep stretches and a short section on a public road. Keep your dog close on shared paths. Check current trail notices before setting out.

Scotland by region
The eight areas run from Rogart and Lybster in the far north to Newcastleton and Dumfries, with Skye and the Western Isles for island stays. Each card compares enclosed lawns, open grounds and house layouts.
Northern Highlands
Sealladh Mor near Rogart gives up to three dogs a large enclosed lawn on a working croft, with the house all on one level. Station House outside Lybster also has an enclosed garden. Its nearby road has fast traffic and no footpath, so plan dog walks away from the roadside.
North Kessock
Heron and Moorhen Lodges sit in Craigbreck Wood near North Kessock, outside Inverness itself. Each sleeps four, accepts two dogs and has its own veranda and hot tub. They can be booked together for eight people. The surrounding woodland is open rather than an enclosed garden for the dogs.
Cairngorms
Katchana near Kincraig sleeps eight, with open grounds and a sloping approach. Old Distillery Lodge in Kingussie sleeps nineteen and welcomes two dogs. One bedroom is in a detached annexe called the Dog House. Its garden is not fully enclosed, and preferred bed configurations need arranging two weeks ahead.
Perthshire
Maryland Cottage near Abernethy has a single-storey layout and artificial turf in its enclosed rear garden. For a much larger party, Tayview in Killin sleeps eighteen and allows two dogs, with a multi-level garden. Its lounge cannot seat everyone together.
Angus and Aberdeenshire
Whitehouse Woodwrae near Forfar has an enclosed rear lawn for two dogs, reached by a bumpy farm approach. Craignure in Gardenstown has bedrooms downstairs and living space above. Steep steps connect its terraces, which are not a secure ground-level dog garden, and parking is roadside.
Lochaber and Skye
Masada in Spean Bridge welcomes three dogs and has seven double bedrooms with an enclosed rear lawn. Faodail House on Skye also takes three dogs, with a self-catered wood-fired hot tub. Its listing describes the garden as enclosed, but the boundary detail and usable dog space have not been verified.
Western Isles
Clachan Sands Cottage on North Uist sleeps six; Eagle Lodge on Lewis sleeps ten. Both welcome dogs without stating a maximum, so confirm numbers before booking. Repairs to Clachan's reported fence gaps remain unconfirmed; Eagle has no established enclosed garden. Eagle's bedrooms include a children's bunk room.
Southern Scotland
Netherraw near Newcastleton has an enclosed front lawn and shared use of the owner's field. Further west, The Steading near Dumfries accepts two dogs and has an enclosed patio. Its courtyard doubles as parking, with farm dogs and livestock nearby.
Dog & hot tub questions
What needs arranging for a ferry trip with the dog?
For Lewis, North Uist or Bute, check the sailing and pet places before booking accommodation. CalMac requires a pet ticket even for travel in your car or outside. Indoor pet areas have limited capacity, with a ticket needed for each dog. Dogs must stay on leads aboard, and you cannot freely return to the car deck during the crossing.
What other dog rules apply?
At Easter Urray Farmhouse, dogs stay in the kitchen. Strone excludes bedrooms, drawing and dining rooms and requires written permission to leave dogs alone; poultry roam outdoors. Other stays restrict dogs to social areas or downstairs, bar bedrooms and furniture, or require leads outside. Little Lodge accepts one small dog; Rowan House excludes aggressive dogs and breeds the provider describes as dangerous.
What hot tub rules should we plan around?
Wood-fired hot tubs at Faodail House, Rowan House, Rowan Cottage and Schiehallion House need preparation. Rowan Cottage supplies starter logs; buy extras locally. At Schiehallion, confirm which facilities cost an extra 1,000 pounds. Ralston Bothy is adults-only; it and Craignure require advance hot tub requests. Craignure adds no charge. Netherraw may not be hot on the first evening. Fernbank House, Tayview and Old Distillery Lodge allow use from 9am-9.30pm only. Grant Cottage bars children from the hot tub.
