Choose a walk for the day
Defined parts of Scarborough's North Bay, South Bay and Filey beach exclude dogs from 1 May to 30 September. Use council maps and signs to find the permitted stretches; specified promenade sections require leads all year. Cayton Bay welcomes dogs year-round, but the path and steps are steep. Check tides too, as the beach narrows at high water.
For an outing from the Vale of Pickering, try the short Ellerburn trail at Dalby Forest. Its 1.7 miles follow mostly flat forest tracks, with a steady incline at the end. Start at the visitor-centre car park and follow purple markers with white arrows. The route is shared with cyclists; use a lead if your dog's recall is unreliable.
Across the county boundary in Lancashire, Birch Hills is a 1.3-mile woodland walk at Gisburn Forest and Stocks. Start at Stocks Reservoir car park, rather than the Hub. The easy-access path has reservoir views and a picnic area. Keep your dog close and follow local lead signs.
Coast, Vale and Tosside
Where the cottages are
Start with Scarborough or Filey for a larger town house, or the coastal villages and Vale of Pickering for smaller cottages and lodges. Tosside is the western forest base. North Beach Lodge excludes Sunday arrivals; both it and Yardley Manor exclude stag and hen parties.
Scarborough houses
North Beach Lodge, Yardley Manor, Seacrest Lodge and Coronation House offer space for shared trips. At Yardley Manor, dogs stay on the ground floor, and the main lounge is upstairs. At North Beach, outdoor music stops at 9pm and the hot tub closes at 11pm. Seacrest's front-side garden has an opening; supervise dogs. Coronation's outdoor space is decking, rather than a lawn.
Filey and Lebberston
Lebberston's Owl View gives four people an enclosed lawn and patio; sheep graze nearby and rear fencing is around four feet. Rutland Grange at Filey sleeps fourteen over several floors, with two flights of stairs and a small rear hot-tub patio. Pick Owl View for more ground outside, or Rutland for a larger group.
Scalby and Suffield
Wagtail Nest is an adults-only cottage with an enclosed dog paddock. The Old Workshop has a gated courtyard, small downstairs double and mezzanine bedroom. Hawthorn Cottage at Silpho takes one small dog, with loose resident dogs and livestock on its farm. It may not suit timid or reactive dogs. Its approach is rough, its bedroom is on a mezzanine, and children under one cannot stay.
Burniston and Cloughton
Castle View at Burniston accommodates eight people and three dogs, with a dog wash for muddy returns. Check its gate before relying on the garden boundary; small dogs can get out. At The Nook in Cloughton, low walls are unsuitable for dogs that jump. Both need outdoor supervision rather than an assumption of secure boundaries.
Irton Moor and Stepney Hill
Tawny Cottage and The Pheasantry at Irton Moor each take one dog; their patios need supervision around farm animals. Tawny has steep steps. At Stepney Hill Farm, Kaitkyella Lodge requires a lead whenever your dog is outside. Its hot tub costs 50 pounds extra. The farm hosts weddings most Saturdays and some Fridays from April to October.
Staintondale
Swift Cabin sleeps six on a farm at Staintondale. It accepts two small dogs or one medium dog, with walks from the farm and a private wood-fired hot tub. There are steps at the entrance. Its enclosed decking gives you outdoor sitting space, but not a lawn for the dog; supervise beyond the deck.
Vale of Pickering
Stags Mount has a site dog-exercise field and hot tub decking. East Heslerton's Jean's Place, Lazy Dayz Lodge and Silverdale View have enclosed or gated decks up entrance steps; Jean's Place also has a side lawn. The Old Chapel has an enclosed rear garden, but keep dogs under control around village poultry. Its listing gives two housekeeping-bond amounts, so confirm the amount before booking.
Tosside
Gisburn Forest Lodge is the western option, at Tosside on the Yorkshire side of the county boundary. Five people and two dogs can stay, with a private hot tub and working farmland outside. Post-and-wire fences are not dog-proof, so stay with your dog. Birch Hills offers a separate woodland outing across the border in Lancashire.
