The dog-friendly promise
How many dogs, and where they can go outside
Plan a route your dog can manage
Lakeshore tracks and the climb above Aira Force
The main circuit follows broad gravel paths with some inclines, giving you a lower-level walk near the Coniston cottages. Dogs need short leads because livestock graze here throughout the year. The optional higher section crosses a field that can be muddy, so stay with the main circuit for firmer footing.
The path between Wray and Claife offers a lakeside outing away from traffic. Take a lead: the National Trust's published route asks for dogs to be kept on one. The surface mixes tarmac, gravel and stones with some short, steep sections. It is a linear walk, so choose a turning point that leaves enough energy for the return.
For a longer outing from the Ullswater side, the full National Trust trail is 4.5 miles. Beyond the Glade, expect narrow paths, steep drops and flights of steps rather than a level waterfall stroll. The route also crosses open fell. Keep dogs on leads for livestock and ground-nesting birds.
Match the stay to the trip
Town houses, working farms and fell-side pods
The stays are spread around the Park: Keswick and Hutton John in the north, Hartsop and Bampton in the east, Santon Bridge in the west, and Coniston, Bowness and Witherslack in the south.
Keswick for four or eight
Heathfield sleeps four with an enclosed rear garden, sauna and hot tub. Children under sixteen are not accepted, and arrivals cannot be on Saturdays. Greta Mill sleeps eight and takes two dogs, with a courtyard hot tub instead of a lawn. The park and river are across the road.
Bowness houses with steps
Brantlea and North Cottage both sleep eight, with their own hot tubs and no stated numeric dog limit. Brantlea's garden is steep and tiered, with steps inside and out. North Cottage covers three floors, and its outdoor space includes a brook and boundary gaps. These are houses for a group that can manage the levels and accompany dogs outside.
Hartsop's Crossgate farm pods
The Stag, Lovies Place, Jenny and Hartsop Magic each offer a private deck hot tub and room for four, including a sofa bed. Each permits one dog, kept on a lead everywhere on the farm. You park in the main car park and carry bags to your pod. A hob and microwave replace a full oven, so these suit simpler meals between walks. Vehicle charging and disposable barbecues are not permitted.
Meadow Syke, near Bampton
Choose Barn for four people and an enclosed ground-level yard, or the adjoining Byre for two with a private patio. Both allow two dogs and share a washing room and exercise fields. Hot-tub supplements are 60 pounds for Barn and 50 for Byre. Minimum stays vary by date; confirm whether your booking requires three or seven nights. The shingle approach is steep, with a tight turn.
Wood-fired hot tubs at Hutton John
Home Farm House sleeps six, with a boot room and a separate utility room for laundry. There are internal steps despite its ground-floor bedroom. The Gardener's Retreat is for two adults and one dog, with a private patio and a walled garden shared with another cabin. Each property has its own wood-fired hot tub, but only the first night's wood is supplied. Bring separate hot tub towels for The Gardener's Retreat.
The farms north of Coniston
Yew Tree Farm sleeps six, takes two dogs and has an enclosed garden beside a working farm. Expect livestock, resident animals and visiting groups, along with low beams and upstairs bedrooms. Tilberthwaite Farm Cottage sleeps four and takes one dog. Its enclosed deck does not contain the wider farm, and the route to the rear hot tub goes around the front of the cottage.
Little Arrow, Torver and Bracken Ground
Browside sleeps fourteen, with nine external steps, sloping grounds and a 10pm hot-tub cut-off. Two dogs are allowed; neither can be left unattended indoors. Bracken Ground sleeps ten; its open grounds include a pond and beck. For four people, Copper Beech Cottage near Torver has a hot tub across the drive, unavailable in high winds. Its narrow approach passes through farm country, and short breaks are restricted to winter.
Santon Bridge and Witherslack for groups
Fell Foot at Santon Bridge sleeps eight on the Eskdale side of the Park. Dogs need supervision around its stream, bridges and cattle grid. Farther south, Grove House at Witherslack sleeps thirteen, with four bedrooms in the main house and two in an external annexe. Its narrow, unadopted approach and weak mobile signal are worth planning for. Bookings begin on Fridays for three or seven nights.
