The dog-friendly promise
A shared field for dogs at Washford
Local access
Burnham beach zones and inland dog walks
North of the sea wall at Maddocks Slade, dogs can use the beach through Berrow and Brean all year, under control or on a lead. Burnham's jetty-to-pavilion stretch bans dogs year-round. Its neighbouring zones, towards the yacht club and Maddocks Slade, exclude dogs from May to September. At Berrow, avoid the mud exposed at low tide. Keep dogs on leads on Brean Down.
Use the 1.2km Grebe Trail for a firm, level walk with your dog on a lead. Dogs are not allowed on the Bittern Trail. Keep your dog out of the lake.
Livestock may be on the hills at any time of year. On Open Access land, use a lead no longer than two metres from 1 March to 31 July, and whenever livestock are nearby. Elsewhere, follow rights of way and keep dogs under close control.
Across Somerset
Burnham, Chew Valley and the inland villages
Burnham's houses put you in town.
Burnham-on-Sea and Lympsham
Greenlawns puts the beach and town centre within walking distance, with a 10pm noise curfew in its residential setting. Seacider has room for a smaller group. For a couple with two dogs, The Hideaway at Lympsham has an enclosed garden. Plan to drive to dog walks from this cottage.
Bishop Sutton and Nempnett Thrubwell
Choose Ninky Nonk for Chew Valley Lake walks and a private enclosed patio back at the cottage. Nempnett Farmhouse near Blagdon has a utility room for walking gear and a lawned rear garden. It allows one dog, which must stay downstairs.
Washford's group houses
The Linhay's shared field is reached through a gate, so dogs have space for exercise as well as the cottage's enclosed garden. The Old Byres shares that field and takes three dogs. Keep dogs supervised near the stream. Part of the walk from The Linhay to the shop and pub is along a road with no pavement.
Crowcombe and North Petherton
Crowcombe is in the Quantocks; North Petherton lies on their lower slopes. The Stables offers a small base at Crowcombe, but check whether its garden is enclosed. The Nest has an enclosed rear garden, with shops and pubs in town.
Bathealton
Court Lodge's half-acre garden is not dog-proof, so dogs need supervision. The cottage sits on the edge of a small village near Wiveliscombe.
Pendomer, near Yeovil
Expect a narrow-lane approach to The Fox Den. Supervise dogs around the garden pond. A boot room and warm outside tap help after muddy walks, but dogs must stay downstairs and off carpeted areas.
Henley and Wedmore
Bramley Cottage sits beside a working farm at Henley and has an enclosed rear garden; plan to drive for supplies. Swan Lodge Castle Farm near Wedmore looks over the Somerset Levels. Alpacas may be loose in the grounds, so confirm the outdoor arrangements for your dog through the booking page.
