Woodland days with the dog
Westonbirt, Woodchester and the Forest of Dean
In Silk Wood, dogs may be off lead if they stay under control and return when called. Use a lead on the Downs and Treetop Walkway. The Old Arboretum does not admit pet dogs, so plan your route around the permitted areas.
Woodchester has waymarked paths through a wooded valley, with uneven ground and some steep sections. Keep dogs on leads, using a short lead near grazing animals and on the play trail. A longer lead can give more room on woodland tracks without livestock.
Dogs can join you on this Forest of Dean trail, where sculptures stand among the trees. Expect uneven paths and slopes, some steep. Keep dogs close and in sight on the official trails. Download the route map before setting off, as mobile signal is limited.
Four areas, seven stays
Town cottages, farm stays and Cotswold houses
Use these area notes alongside the cards to compare house rules and outdoor space. At Tickmorend Farm, combined hot tub and sauna use costs 40 pounds per day, paid to the owner before arrival. Gym use costs 45 pounds per stay, and music is not permitted in the grounds.
Birdwood and Longhope, west of Gloucester
The Hay Barn at Birdwood sleeps four, with an enclosed front patio and a utility room with a washing machine. Children must be over five; dogs need leads on the surrounding working stud farm. For eight people, Ranbir House in Longhope has a games room, a hot tub and a pergola-covered patio. Its garden stream and small drop are unfenced, and the water can rise after rain. Supervise dogs and children closely outside.
Tewkesbury for two adults
Runnymede and Avonmede are neighbouring cottages by King John's Bridge, each for two adults with its own hot tub. Both have low ceilings and steep stairs. Runnymede has an enclosed terraced garden and a tight parking space; very large cars may need alternative parking nearby. Avonmede has decking and steps to the hot tub; its permit parking is nearby and subject to space. Music from the pub opposite Avonmede can continue until 10.30pm. Runnymede can be noisier during the annual music festival.
Sheepscombe and Horsley for larger parties
The Gables in Sheepscombe sleeps eight and provides a warm-water dog wash. Approach lanes are narrow. Its hot tub seats six, and the one permitted dog must not be left unattended. Supervise children in the multi-level garden. Tickmorend Farm at Horsley sleeps ten in the main house, with an enclosed front lawn. All bedrooms are upstairs; the top floor has low beams and small doors. Its pond and unheated plunge pool occupy a separate gated area. Children need supervision outside at all times.
Westonbirt for four people and one dog
The Coach House stands opposite the arboretum, with its own private hot tub. The wider grounds are shared with the owners, their animals and another holiday property; keep dogs on leads there. Expect garden steps and sloping bedroom ceilings. Stays need at least three nights, with arrivals and departures on Mondays or Fridays. The hot tub is deep-cleaned between stays, so it may still be warming up when you arrive.
