Gloucestershire outings

Commons and woods

Rodborough Common views walk

Rodborough is one of the commons near Tickmorend Farm. The National Trust's one-mile circuit crosses grassy tracks and open hillsides from the common car park. It is rated moderate. Grazing cattle mean this is a lead walk.

The Silk Wood digital trail

Use Silk Wood for Westonbirt's 2.3-mile Go Jauntly trail; pet dogs cannot enter the Old Arboretum. Download the route before visiting; normal admission charges apply. Keep dogs on leads over the Treetop Walkway and across the Downs. In Silk Wood, dogs with reliable recall can explore off lead under effective control.

Painswick to Frith Wood

Painswick is two miles from Sheepscombe, so this four-mile circuit suits a stay at The Gables. Start at Stamages Lane car park and allow two to two and a half hours. Stiles, steep stretches and sometimes muddy woodland paths make it more demanding than the common. Use a lead unless signs permit otherwise, especially around livestock.

Where to spend your Cotswold break

The larger houses offer different outdoor arrangements, while the four-person Coach House shares its grounds. At Tickmorend, adding the hot tub and sauna costs 40 pounds for each day; arrange payment with the owner before the stay. Gym access adds a separate 45-pound charge per stay.

Sheepscombe

The Gables' warm dog wash helps after the woodland outings around Painswick. Eight people can stay here, with a six-seat hot tub outside. Expect narrow approach lanes and a garden over several levels. Dogs cannot be left alone indoors or out, so include yours in the day's plans. Supervise children in the garden.

Fulbrook, near Burford

Tawny Cottage puts Burford about twenty minutes away on foot. Its enclosed rear garden gives a group of eight outdoor space between outings. The wood-fired hot tub is included, but heating takes several hours. Stag and hen groups are excluded. Arrange EV charging beforehand if needed; it costs 15 pounds per stay.

Horsley, near Nailsworth

Choose Tickmorend Farm for a ten-person stay near the commons around Nailsworth. All bedrooms are reached by stairs, and two top-floor rooms have low beams. A gated area beyond the enclosed front garden contains the pond and untreated, unheated plunge pool. Watch dogs near the water and children whenever outdoors. Outdoor music is prohibited.

Westonbirt

The Coach House offers four-person stays opposite Westonbirt's woodland. Its hot tub is private, while the grounds also serve the owners and a second cottage and contain resident animals. Use a lead around them. Choose Monday or Friday for both arrival and departure, staying at least three nights. Barbecues are banned; the hot tub may not be at full heat on arrival.
