The dog-friendly promise
A lawn, a yard or a farm beyond the gate
Days out across the county
A tarn circuit, Roman walls and coastal dunes
For a shorter outing from northern Cumbria, the published slow trail covers 1.5 miles on mainly firm, fairly level paths, with a few short climbs. There are no gates or stiles on the route. Keep dogs on leads in the zone around the tearoom and under control elsewhere.
Birdoswald Roman Fort allows dogs on leads in its outdoor areas, and assistance dogs are welcome. Parking is about 200 metres from the fort, so allow for the extra walk.
The dunes have uneven, undulating paths, so this is a different outing from a promenade. Livestock graze year-round: use a short lead around them and keep dogs close around nesting and wintering birds. Keep dogs out of the reserve's wildlife pools, where harmful algae can also occur.

The National Park and the rest of Cumbria
Outside the National Park, the choices include shepherd's huts near Brampton, a farm cottage near Dufton, farm stays around Ulverston and group houses near Kirkby Lonsdale.
Carlisle, Brampton and Armathwaite
A sofa bed lets Berrymoor Cottage sleep four, and its rear garden is fully enclosed. The Hollies sleeps six and takes three dogs. For two adults and one dog, High Rigg Shepherd's Hideaway, Retreat and Sunrise each have their own hot tub and steps, with livestock nearby and no dog-proof garden. Near Armathwaite, A and C Lodge-Plot 21 sleeps four and accepts one small dog. Its freshly cleaned hot tub is not hot until later on the first evening.
Dufton, Bampton and Hutton John
Rum Bush Cottage near Dufton pairs an enclosed lawn with a private balcony hot tub on a livestock farm. At Bampton, Meadow Syke Barn sleeps four and Byre sleeps two; both take two dogs and share dog-washing facilities and exercise fields. Their hot tub supplements are 60 and 50 pounds respectively. Home Farm House at Hutton John sleeps six; The Gardener's Retreat takes two adults and one dog. Both have wood-fired hot tubs, with only the first night's wood supplied.
Keswick and Bowness
Heathfield in Keswick has an enclosed rear garden, hot tub and sauna, but accepts no children under sixteen or Saturday arrivals. Greta Mill sleeps eight, with a courtyard hot tub and the park across the road. In Bowness, Brantlea and North Cottage each sleep eight. Both involve steps and outdoor supervision: Brantlea has steep, tiered grounds, while North Cottage has a brook and gaps in its boundary.
The four Crossgate pods at Hartsop
The Stag, Lovies Place, Jenny and Hartsop Magic each take one dog and sleep four using a sofa bed. Each has its own deck and hot tub on the same farm. Dogs must stay on leads throughout the site, and cars remain in the main car park. Cooking is on a hob or in a microwave, with no oven; disposable barbecues and vehicle charging are not allowed.
Coniston and Torver
Yew Tree Farm sleeps six with an enclosed garden, livestock and visiting farm groups nearby. Tilberthwaite Farm Cottage sleeps four; reach its rear hot tub around the front of the building. Copper Beech Cottage's hot tub is across the drive and unavailable in high winds. For larger groups, Browside sleeps fourteen with nine entrance steps and a 10pm hot tub curfew. Bracken Ground sleeps ten in open grounds with a pond and beck.
Santon Bridge and Arlecdon
On the western side of the National Park, Fell Foot at Santon Bridge sleeps eight. A stream with bridges runs through its grounds, and dogs can get past the cattle grid, so go out with them. Farther north at Arlecdon, Kirkland Howe Cottage sleeps three and takes two dogs. The farm requires leads near livestock and through the fields, and there are streams nearby. The bedrooms and bathroom are upstairs.
Furness and the coast
Colt Park Cottage at Aldingham has an enclosed lawn, but the coastal road has no footpath. Green Hills Farm's lawn is across the parking area on a working farm. Bank End Barn at Grizebeck sleeps eleven; its garden walls may not stop a dog that jumps, and neighbouring dogs can be seen through the slatted gates. Cherry is a compact farm pod for four, including a sofa bed, with no oven. Links Lodge at Flookburgh sleeps six, with its hot tub on a south-facing deck; passes for the park's leisure facilities cost extra.
Crooklands, Kirkby Lonsdale and Witherslack
Crooklands Cottage sleeps ten with an enclosed rear garden, a river nearby and the canal across the road. Pen-y-Ghent and Ingleborough near Kirkby Lonsdale each sleep eight, with their own courtyard hot tub beside a shared drive. Both require at least three nights. Grove House at Witherslack sleeps thirteen across the main house and an external annexe. It has a narrow approach and accepts Friday arrivals for three or seven nights.
