Before you set off
Hamble paths and the New Forest's dog rules
This Bursledon park has woodland and riverside paths. Follow the paw-print signs for lead and off-lead areas, and keep dogs away from livestock. A paid dog wash is available after a muddy walk. The Barn cafe welcomes dogs on leads.
Stay on the main tracks, especially from March to August when birds nest on the ground. Keep dogs away from grazing ponies and cattle, and use a lead if they will not reliably return when called.
For a flatter walk in the South Downs, this route follows a former railway between West Meon and Wickham. Dogs are allowed, and the trail is shared with cyclists and horse riders.
Setting and house rules
In and around the New Forest, or farther east
Coombe Place House sleeps fifteen and Groomes sixteen. The other houses sleep eight or nine, so compare their settings and dog arrangements once you know who's coming.
Shobley and Sopley
For two dogs and New Forest walks from the door, choose Brook Farm in Shobley. With one dog, Northern Byre in Sopley offers a private field adjoining the Avon River pathway. Both houses sleep eight.
Bursledon by the Hamble
Bailey Cottage takes one dog as standard and has an enclosed front lawn. River Hamble Country Park is also in Bursledon.
Bishop's Waltham and Meonstoke
Coppice Hill House in Bishop's Waltham takes two dogs and has enclosed gardens. Coombe Place House sleeps fifteen in Meonstoke, a village in the Meon Valley.
Frith End, near Farnham
Groomes Country House is at Frith End in east Hampshire; Farnham is the town label on its booking page. It sleeps sixteen and allows two small or medium dogs, which must stay on the ground floor or in the heated boiler house.
