Routes and dog access

Rye Harbour, the Cuckoo Trail and Littlehampton's beaches

Rye Harbour Nature Reserve

The main track from Rye Harbour village past the Discovery Centre to the beach is a lead walk, with benches along the way. More areas are closed to dogs during the nesting season. Follow the marked dog zones and check the reserve's website for temporary access restrictions before travelling.

The Cuckoo Trail at Hellingly

Hellingly has a car park beside the 14-mile Cuckoo Trail, which links Heathfield and Shinewater Park. Its sealed surface makes it a useful choice after rain. Dogs must stay under control on this mostly traffic-free route, shared with cyclists and, on some sections, horse riders.

Littlehampton's summer beach limits

For a beach day from Yapton, check the section before heading onto the sand. Dogs are excluded between Littlehampton's East Pier and Norfolk Road from 1 May to 30 September and must be on leads on the adjoining promenade. The West Beach boardwalk also requires leads; follow the signs at your access point.

Space, access and neighbours

Four ways to stay in East and West Sussex

Udimore near Rye and Hellingly near Hailsham are in East Sussex. In West Sussex, Yapton offers a family house or a pod for two, inland from Littlehampton.

Udimore's six-person cottages

Birch Cottage and Willow Cottage each have two bedrooms plus a sofa bed, with their own enclosed garden and hot tub. Birch is single-storey, with bedroom doors opening outside. Willow Cottage forms a wing of the owners' home, with outside bedroom steps where children need supervision. Hedges can obscure its garden sea view. The nearest pub is about a mile away along a busy road without a pavement.

A thatched house in Yapton

Spring Cottage sleeps eight in four bedrooms, including a ground-floor king-size room with its own shower room. The enclosed garden wraps around the house, with a lawn and hot tub beside the outdoor dining area. A main road runs alongside and neighbours are close. Outdoor noise needs consideration for neighbours, and stag and hen groups are not accepted.

Yapton's two-person pods

Filbert Pod and Willow Pod offer compact studios with their own hot tubs on a site with other accommodation, horses and dogs. Both have a step up to the decking. Dogs need a lead or close supervision outside. Willow Pod requires at least three nights. Both pods normally limit stays to seven nights, with longer visits by prior arrangement.

Pump House at Hellingly

Pump House sleeps two and allows babes in arms only. Its small enclosed garden is reached through a side gate, a few steps from the door. You can also walk dogs in the owners' ten-acre grounds and woodland, with close supervision by the lakes and ponds. The cottage has its own hot tub; the owners live next door. Parking is for one car.
