Out on the trails
Along the trail and into the dales
This former railway runs through the limestone dales on a largely level surface. Choose an access point to match the distance you want to walk. Dogs need leads; keep left for cyclists and horse riders, with a short lead through the tunnels.
Longshaw welcomes dogs on short leads throughout the year. Woodland trails and open spaces give you a choice of walks; the cafe has a designated indoor dog area and outdoor seating. Water bowls are available around the cafe and welcome hub.
A footpath past The Farmhouse leads towards Gratton Dale, Smerrill Moor and the Limestone Way. On open-access land, leads must be fixed and no longer than two metres during 1 March to 31 July, or around livestock at any time. Follow local restrictions too.
Different ways to stay
Eyam and the quieter villages
All six cottages are inside the National Park, including its Cheshire side at Wildboarclough. Eyam offers a village base for three, while the farm conversions and larger rural houses suit different group sizes.
Eyam
Lydgate Cottage sleeps three and supplies a dog bed and bowls. Its covered hot tub sits on the patio. Inside, low doorways, uneven flagstones and partially open stairs need care; the cottage is unlikely to suit someone who needs step-free access.
Gratton and Middleton
Dale End Farm offers the four-person Cottage or The Old Cowsheds, two cottages booked together for ten. The Cottage has an unfenced lawn beside farm animals. In Middleton near Youlgreave, The Farmhouse sleeps eighteen and has a garden that is not fully enclosed.
Wildboarclough
The Bothy sleeps twelve with an enclosed garden. Before booking, ask whether the hard-to-heat sitting room and damp reported in two bedrooms have been resolved. Pump noise can affect one bedroom. Get arrival directions in advance, as phone signal is poor.
Millthorpe
The Loft is a stable conversion for seven, with private hot tub and sauna facilities in a separate building. Its open courtyard and approaching resident dogs may not suit a reactive dog. Working stables lie beneath the bedrooms, and there is no washing machine.
Dog & hot tub questions
Which stays charge extra or take a bond?
The Old Cowsheds charges 150 pounds for the hot tub and 10 pounds per day for each dog, paid to the owner in cash on arrival. Dale End Farm Cottage charges 100 pounds for its hot tub, also in cash on arrival, plus 10 pounds per night for the dog. These are separate bookings with different allowances. Five listings also take a housekeeping bond, from 150 pounds at Dale End Farm Cottage to 1,000 pounds at The Farmhouse.
Which bedroom layouts need a closer look?
At The Loft, bedrooms interconnect and the bathroom is reached through them; one twin room also has an external staircase. It has low beams and internal stairs. The Bothy has two staircases and a walk-through room. Check the layout with everyone in your party before booking.
Are there arrival or group-booking restrictions?
Lydgate accepts Monday or Friday arrivals, with check-in at 3pm and a strict 10am departure. The Farmhouse is reached by a single-track road and allows no day visitors. The Bothy requires prior owner consent for hen, stag or similar groups.
