Out with the dog

Ridge paths, lakeshore walks and woodland

The Roaches on a lead

Dogs must be on leads at the Roaches nature reserve. The ridge paths include steps and steep, uneven sections that can become muddy. Doxey Pool is fenced off to let its banks and wildlife recover, so it is not a dog-paddling stop.

Rudyard's easier eastern shore

The old railway route along the east shore is fairly level; the western circuit has hills, stiles and rougher ground. Dogs must stay close and under control. At Rudyard Lake Cafe, dogs can join you in the outside seating area on a lead, but not inside the cafe or orangery.

Biddulph Grange Country Park

The country park welcomes dogs under control on its woodland and meadow paths. Some routes are easy, while others climb steeply across uneven ground. It is separate from the National Trust's Biddulph Grange Garden, where only assistance dogs are admitted.

Where to stay

From Bradnop's barns to the Rudyard shore

These stays are in the Staffordshire Moorlands. The barns at Bradnop and Bottomhouse have enclosed gardens. At Rudyard, three stays sit on the water; Watersview is a short walk from the lake.

Bradnop's two barns

Parlour Barn and Pastures Barn each sleep six, with an enclosed lawn, private hot tub and sauna. Parlour's garden has several levels, and farm animals live nearby. Confirm whether each barn has a private games room or shares one for your stay. Christmas and New Year bookings require at least four nights, with some arrival dates excluded.

HollyDale on the same estate

HollyDale has four bedrooms for eight people, an enclosed wraparound garden and its own games room, hot tub and sauna. The house covers three floors, with entrance steps and steep stairs to the top bedroom. Christmas and New Year stays have a four-night minimum; arrivals are unavailable on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Year's Eve and New Year's Day.

The Farmhouse at Biddulph Moor

This eight-person house has a ground-floor twin bedroom and a utility room. Dogs must stay downstairs and off the furniture. A low front wall and an open hot-tub area mean dogs need supervision outside. Christmas bookings must be a week or longer.

Bottomhouse for a group of fourteen

Bottomhouse Barn combines two large family bedrooms with a double room and adult bunks. There is an enclosed garden, but only one dog is allowed. The optional private hot tub costs 150 pounds per week or short break, paid to the owner. Stays are limited to seven nights. A spiral staircase and steps to one family room may affect your bedroom choice.

Watersview Lodge at Rudyard

Watersview sleeps six, with a hot tub on its own deck and access to a shared lawn. The lodge is all on one level. Dogs have got under the deck gate, so the deck is not dog-proof. The rules exclude stag and hen parties, similar groups, and groups or couples aged under 25.

The Sheiling's lakeside terraces

The Sheiling sleeps six, with an outdoor shower and several sitting areas beside Rudyard Lake. Two bedrooms are on the ground floor, but there are steps on the approach and into the double room. The patio and lake access are unenclosed. Stays need at least three nights, or a full week during school holidays; boat launching is through the yacht club.

Lady Of The Lake over the water

A boardwalk reaches this four-person house, whose kitchen and living room are upstairs. The private hot tub is back on the shore. Dogs need close supervision around the unenclosed pond and lake. The approach slopes, with steps and low headroom inside. Arrivals are Monday or Friday for at least three nights, or a full week in school holidays.

Horton Lodge Boathouse for two

This adults-only apartment takes one dog and has its own deck beside the water. About fifty steps lead down to it, so it is unsuitable for limited mobility and may be difficult with a dog that needs carrying. The owners live above the apartment. The open waterfront offers lake views rather than enclosed space for the dog.
